Tip for Plantar Fascial Tears: Hoka One One Shoes

Hi Dr. Blake, got the HOKA shoes, and I'm loving them.  I can move so much easier in them, and very little pain (definitely 0-2 range).  I can also put both the right and the left orthotics in, which balances things out pretty well.  I feel like I'm walking more naturally, and I think my legs are getting toned too!  Anyway, thanks a bunch, and I'll see you soon for a follow-up appointment (the 8th, I think).

Hope you are well!

Dr. Blake's comment: These are shoes that roll through the forefoot, limiting toe bend at push off. This is valuable for many forefoot problems and, in this case, plantar fascial tears where you are limiting toe bend and the pull of the fascia for up to 6 months post-injury.

Hoka One One: Pros and Cons

This is a good review of the Hoka One One shoe line. While it may be an introduction to some, my patients have been using these shoes for the last 4-5 years. The negatives for some are the almost zero heel drop (more stress on the achilles), the relatively poor durability, the elevation off the ground (more risk of ankle sprains), and the narrow and shallow toe box (poor for wide feet and orthotic fittings). The positives are almost zero heel drop (great for metatarsal problems), the rocker (great for metatarsal problems), the overall great cushion for shock absorption, and the lightness. So, there are patients that benefit, and the shoe line should be around for a long time.

HOKA ONE ONE: Maximalistic Running Shoes probably here to stay

I have recommended Hoka One One Running Shoes for great shock absorption for walking and running. They are stable, take a little time to get used to, but can minimize the impact shock that can destroy knees. For those long distance runners with Hoka One One and Hannaford Orthotics (previously prescribed) their impact shock is almost nada, nilch, zero, zip!! Yes, we are talking about another version of runner's high.
