I am so excited to present the Jen Review on Vitamin D. Any time an athlete presents with a bone injury there must at least by a discussion into bone health. You injure your bones running long distance, makes sense, but could have it been avoided and more fractures prevented by checking bone health. There are so many factors involved in bone health, but Vitamin D is a big one. And, Vitamin D deficiency is rampant in our society covered with sunblock and long winter months or just long periods of never getting outside except on vacation. This article is a thorough understanding of all aspects of Vitamin D. Jen has done a wonderful job presenting us with the great knowledge base to prevent further bone injuries. Thank you, Jen.
Welcome to the Podiatry Blog of Dr Richard Blake of San Francisco. I hope the pages can help you learn about caring for foot injuries, or help you with your own injury.

Peripheral Nerve Pain/Neuropathy and Vitamin D Deficiency: A Possible Link
This is information from Podiatry Management Online Magazine service.
RE: Fosamax and Neuropathy? (From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Kudos to Dr. Kass for mentioning the relationship between peripheral neuropathy symptoms and vitamin D deficiencies. In our practice, we have worked up a number of patients with severe peripheral neuropathy and found incidental findings of vitamin D deficiencies. In all cases, what motivated the ordering of the test was the finding of osteopenea in the met heads. When the patients were placed on vitamin D supplements (either over-the-counter or prescription grade), they had very rapid resolution of their neuropathic symptoms.

Hence, we now add a vitamin D 25 test as part of our work-up when we evaluate patients presenting with painful neuropathy. I want to caution readers not to interpret this as meaning that all cases of peripheral neuropathy are caused by vitamin D deficiencies, however, it should be on your differential diagnosis list when evaluating patients presenting with pedal symptoms of peripheral neuropathy.

Vitamin D Deficiency: A Podiatrist View on the Crisis
http://www.dreamstime.com/free-stock-image-umbrellas-on-the-beach-rimagefree1019661-resi2565486
Wouldn't you just love to be there? Where ever it is!! Of course, I have been stuck in the coldest summer in 40 years in San Francisco, California, which makes my day dreaming even worse. The image of the umbrellas on the beach highlights our need to protect our skin and avoid sun exposure. We lather up the Sunscreen as dutiful health conscious individuals but one of the side effects is a sudden crisis in Vitamin D Deficiency. What is the big deal? Vitamin D is essential to move calcium into your bones. As a podiatrist, I see too many patients low on Vitamin D and developing stress fractures and joint problems. So, find out your Vitamin D level (read the link below) at your next blood test.
