Hallux Limitus/Rigidus: Comment on Self Mobilization

What if you have arthritis and some bone spurs and it hurts to do this?  Will this make it worse?  thanks

And my response:

Thanks for the comment. The force you generate should not hurt anything, but you do need to do it painlessly. If there is pain, then after the activity, the body tends to tighten the joint even more. Some patients have to use warm water soaks before, or at least move the toes around, to warm them up before the mobilization. Also, if it hurts please ice for 5 minutes after to neutralize the possible irritation. Dr Rich Blake
